Ryan Chai

Ryan Chai is a Research Officer in the Bone Biology Lab at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney, Australia. He completed his PhD at Monash University on cellular stress response and osteoclast biology. His current research focuses on the discovery of genetic and cellular elements involved in bone homeostasis and pathology. He recently pioneered the use of single-cell technologies in bone to reveal for the first time the cellular and transcriptomic landscape of the bone microenvironment in mice and humans. This work, in combination with studies in population genetics and in vivo models, has identified potential mechanisms underlying the regulation of bone mass and defined the role of bone as a niche to harbour cancer cells in the skeleton. He has published over 20 papers in leading scientific journals including Cell, Cancer Cell, Nature Genetics, Nature Communications and Blood.
