Justin L Chen
Dr Justin Chen was awarded his PhD through Monash University in 2014. His research, also conducted at Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, focuses on cancer cachexia, a life-threatening wasting condition without any effective treatment options. Dr Chen, along with his colleagues, developed a new strategy to study key mediators of cachexia in the absence of tumour burden. They found that elevating circulating activin A caused marked loss in muscle mass and overall body weight in mice. In this regard, they developed the first specific activin antagonists as a potential therapeutic intervention. Dr Chen’s findings have been published in high-impact journals, such as Cancer Research, Molecular Therapy and FASEB J. As a result, he has been the recipient of a Cancer Council Victoria Postdoctoral Fellowship, a The CASS Foundation research grant and an ESA Postdoctoral Award.
